What counts as income for benefits

Entitlement to benefits takes into account your (and your partner’s) weekly net income. Your ‘net income’ is the amount you get after any tax has been paid.

For some kinds of income special allowances are available. To work out your income taking into account the special allowances available we need to know if you have any income from charity or voluntary sources, from tenants who pay rent to you and whether you pay money to a student (where you can offset some of your income). We may also ask about income you get in the form of maintenance for you or for your children.

You should not include interest on savings as part of your income. However, if you have savings of over £6,000 you need to declare the amount of savings you have. If so we will ask more about your savings later in the calculator.

You should include under ‘other income’ any money you get that it not listed above.
