Green Homes Grant for people claiming benefits

Green Homes Grant for people claiming benefits

What is it?

The Green Homes Grant is a new government scheme available from the end of September 2020. You can use it to pay for low carbon heating, through a heat pump and/or solar panels, and for insulation measures including cavity wall, under-floor, and loft/roof insulation.

If you use half your budget on low carbon heating and insulation measures you can use the other half for double/triple glazing, upgrading to energy efficient doors and heating controls. You can get full details (as much as exist at the moment) from the government's Green Homes Grant briefing sheet.

You may also be entitled to help through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO); a scheme funded by utility companies. These grants help low income households in England, Scotland and Wales replace inefficient boilers or electric heaters. More information is below.

Anyone who owns their own home qualifies for a Green Homes Grant as long as they are carrying out approved measures (insulation and installing low carbon heating). The only exception is for people who live in a 'new build' property, though the government have not yet defined what counts as 'new build'.

If you are in receipt of one of the following benefits your Green Homes Grant can cover 100% of the cost of work up to a maximum of £10,000:

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer's Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance (income-based or contribution-based)
  • Jobseeker's Allowance (income-based or contribution-based)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Tax Credits (Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits)
  • Universal Credit
