What is it?

The Green Homes Grant is a new government scheme available until the end of March 2021. You can use it to pay for insulation (including cavity wall, under-floor, and loft/roof insulation) and for low carbon heating (heat pumps and solar thermal systems).

If you use half your budget on low carbon heating and insulation measures you can use the other half for double/triple glazing, upgrading to energy efficient doors and heating controls. You can get full details from the government's Green Homes Grant page.

You could get 66% of the cost of works met up to a maximum of £5,000 (people on benefits can get 100% up to £10,000). 

Eligibility

Anyone who owns their own home qualifies so long as they are carrying out approved measures (insulation and installing low carbon heating). The only exception is for people who live in a new build property that has never been occupied.

All eligible homeowners qualify for 66% of the cost of works up to a maximum of £5,000 while people on benefits can get 100% up to £10,000. For more information on who qualifies for the scheme worth up to £10,000 please see our help page on the Green Homes Grant for people on benefits.

Landlords of social and privately rented properties also qualify for 66% of the cost of works up to a maximum of £5,000, but this does not go up if their tenant claims one of the benefits above.

Apply for a grant

In order to apply for a Green Homes Grant you need at least one quote from registered installer. You can then apply for a voucher (which is how the grant is paid out) using the government's Green Homes Grant online application form. Your contractor will then be able to redeem the voucher as payment for the work.
