Definition of EEA citizen

If you are a national of any of the following countries, you might still have entitlement to benefits under European free movement rules, which have been preserved for many people who were already living in the UK before 1 January 2021.

The same rules apply to Swiss nationals.

The EEA consists of the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czechia
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Ireland (but Irish citizens are entitled to benefits under the same rules as British citizens)
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
