If you are part of a couple and one of you lives in residential care on a permanent basis you will usually be treated as separate single claimants rather than claiming benefits as a couple. This may mean you need to carry out two separate benefit calculations, one for each member of the couple, splitting any joint capital. If you are a couple and you both live in residential care please get advice from an experienced adviser. If your landlord provides you with support services, supervision or care then your home may be classified as supported accommodation. Various exemptions from welfare reforms, such as the benefit cap, apply to people living in supported accommodation. If you are in doubt about your housing status please read our information on supported exempt accommodation and/or check with your landlord. This is the correct option if your council has placed you in temporary accommodation while they find alternative accommodation for you. Select this option if you pay rent to someone who also lives in the accommodation and you are not related to them or staying there as a friend. Select this option if you live with a relative or friend on an informal basis, without a contract to pay rent. You may have an informal arrangement to pay money to stay there, but you do not have a formal contract to pay rent or invoices for rent paid. You count as homeless if you have no regular place to stay. You may be staying in different places or on the street.
