If you receive a war disablement pension or war widow(er)'s pension the government disregards (ignores) at least the first £10 a week that you receive. We will automatically work out this disregard.
The amount to enter depends on the kind of war pension or war widow(er)'s pension you receive. The calculator tells you whether you should include all the income you receive or whether you should miss out elements such as Constant Attendance Allowance or war pensioner’s mobility supplement.
Please note that the calculator simplifies the way war pensions work. If you have complex circumstances you may be unable to carry out benefit calculations involving them and should seek further advice. A list of common war pension elements is below.
Some local authorities completely disregard income from war pensions when calculating your entitlement to Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit. If this is the case you should still enter the amount you receive as instructed by the calculator but then indicate that a full disregard operates when the question “Does local authority fully disregard income from war pensions?” appears. Please note that some local authorities fully disregard some elements of a war pension but not others. In such cases your benefit calculation will not be accurate and you should contact your local authority. More information is available on local policies on war pension income.
You can find out more about War Pensions on the Veterans’ Agency website. This also provides more details of the help available to war pensioners to cover the cost of medical treatment, hospital travelling expenses and nursing care.
