What is it?
Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP) can help with unforeseen expenses, for example if you go into hospital or in any other situation that might cause hardship. In these circumstances a DHP can help top-up the benefits that you already get.
Can I get it?
The main rule is that you must already be receiving some Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit. Beyond this it is up to each local authority to decide who to provide help to – guidance states only that you must “appear to the local authority to require some further financial assistance in order to meet housing costs”.
How do I claim?
To make a claim contact your local authority and ask for more details about Discretionary Housing Payment.
