How to claim Pension Credit

Pension Credit is administered by the Pension Service via a network of call centres. You can phone them to apply for Pension Credit on 0800 99 1234 (calls are free, except from some mobiles). The line is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm Saturday. If you have speech or hearing difficulties the textphone number is 0800 169 0133.

Pension Service staff will take your application over the phone (or will call you back if it is more convenient). They will then post the filled-in form to you so you can check it and sign it. The application process should take about twenty minutes. You will need to provide your National Insurance number to complete a claim.

A local service providing home visits also exists but the first point of contact should normally be the phone line.

If you contact the Pension Service but think their decision on your entitlement is wrong you can dispute your award. The Department for Work and Pensions' leaflet If you think our decision is wrong has more information.

Pension Credit payments will normally be back-dated for 12 months.
